Husky mountain tour
North west of Kiruna the Scandinavian Mountains set a natural border to Norway. Here we find the famous Abisko National Park and Sweden's highest mountains - a breathtaking landscape that is hard to access during our sub-arctic winters. But fantastic for a week tour by dog sled and huskies! After comprehensive introduction in technical/physical aspects of driving a dog sled all participants, dogs and equipment will be transferred to the greater area around Abisko. Nights in simple cabins in high alpine surroundings, dog sledding at it's finest, top trained huskies and very routined guides.
Each guest drives his own husky-team with 5 – 6 dogs and takes care of them during the trip. We spend the nights in cabins provided by the Swedeish mountain association. There's no running water or electricity, standards vary from quite basic to more modern accommodations. A sauna is though located in several of them. Breakfast, dinner and a small lunch are included and in the cabins the cooking can be done on gas stoves.
Compared to the weektour, this tour is more demanding. Partly because of the trails and the quickly changing weather conditions, partly because of the fact that all the equipment, food and of course the dogfood have to be carried along in the sleds.
ay 1: Arrival at Kiruna airport/railway station and transfer to the husky base. Here you will have your first dinner. Your guide will outline the tour for you and provide you with necessary information, also checking that nobody left important things at home.
Day 2: After breakfast we load huskies, sleds and equipment onto our dog trucks for 60-80 Km drive to the high mountain area. With arrival you will get instructions of how to drive a dog team. After the first stage we will arrive at the first cabin and help each other with taking care of the huskies, getting water from a lake or creek and preparing dinner. Then it is time to relax and enjoy the evening.
Day 3-5: We have many options for touring the mountain trails, all are most captivating. The trails lead in all directions with a new experience around each bend and never any dull moment. The length of daily stages can vary between 20 and 50 km, depending on the weather, trail conditions and the wishes of the group.
Day 6: On your final day we make sure to reach the transfer cars latest in the early afternoon. Here we load dogs, sleds and gear and return to the husky base. After a sauna and a hot shower we enjoy a farewell dinner.
Day 7: After breakfast transfer to Kiruna airport or railway station.
